Lawn Care

Spring

The time for sowing your grass seed and laying your turf in time for the growing season.

The warm weather encourages more growth and it is recommended that you cut your lawn as often as possible to encourage a dense and even coverage.

Spring fertilizers, weed and moss killers should be applied and you should continue with light scarifying.

Trim and repair the lawn edges, remembering to vary the mowing pattern and turning points in order to avoid wear.

Increase the cutting height in drier weather. A slighter longer cut retains the moisture better and is less likely to suffer from 'sunburn'.

Water lawns during early morning or late evening.

Light scarifying and continued weed control should be maintained.

Summer

Mowing should be continued regularly, twice a week if possible. This helps to prevent weed growth and stimulates the growth of the grass.

Increase the cutting height in drier weather. A slighter longer cut retains the moisture better and is less likely to suffer from 'sunburn'.

Scarify lightly but not in drought conditions and water regularly.

During very dry weather conditions, aerate the lawn to help moisture get to the roots.

New lawns can also be sown in late summer and should be cut before the end of the season. Avoid walking on the lawn until the following spring.

For established lawns, raise the height of the cut as the grass grows more slowly.

Scarify more vigarously to remove moss and thatch.

During late summer, top dress the lawn with a mixture of peat, sand and loam. This will promote vigarous growth.

Autumn

Continue to cut newly laid lawns but only down to a height of 4 - 5cm (1 - 1 1/2").

Reduce the frequency of mowing an established lawn.

Continue with scarifying and spiking to assist with any drainage problems.

Collect any fallen leaves and trim back any trees that overhang the lawn thereby causing shaded areas on the lawn.

Make the final cut of the year during November.

Keep off the grass during heavy wet or frosty periods to avoid damage to the lawn.

Winter

Avoid walking on the lawn during the winter months.

Start to plan for any new lawns or repairs.

March is the time for sowing new seeds and laying turf.

Providing that the weather is not too wet or cold, scarify to remove dead moss and thatch.

Scatter any worm casts with a broom and make your first cut of the season when you start to see signs of lawn growth. Remember to keep the cutting height at it's highest at this time.

Do not cut too short at this time in the year and remove all clippings from the lawn.
