Buying Advice
Lawnmowers come with two types of cutting systems, cylinder and rotary and with three types of power source, mains electricity, battery and petrol.
A cylinder mower uses a scissor like action where the blade revolves and in doing so, skims a bottom fixed plate which produces a clean, fine cut. This type of blade is ideal for creating a striped lawn.
Rotary mowers use a high speed revolving blade that cuts the grass in a scythe like action. These mowers are capable of cutting long grass as well as wet grass and if fitted with a roller, will also produce a striped lawn finish.
You will need to consider various things when selecting a lawnmower.
Small Lawns: Manoeuvrability will be paramount and quiet operation may be worth considering.
Medium Sized Lawns: Lawns in medium sized gardens are often a feature of the garden and therefore require a clean and possibly striped finish. Awkward shapes to the lawn may also require additional manoeuvrability.
Large Lawns: Large lawns and spacious gardens will require a broad cut and will be labour intensive. Consideration may therefore need to be given towards the option of a ride-on model. Orchards and rough grassed areas will require a heavy duty cut and a powerful mower.
